Why Are Employers Cutting Back On IT Project Managers?

In the last 3 weeks, we have received many Video CV review requests from IT Project Managers. It seems like a very strange thing as I would have thought that IT project management was a very specialised area and that their services would be in strong demand. It seems, however not to be the case.

This got me thinking- why would an employer get rid of their key people in such a specialist area? One answer is perhaps that companies are simply cutting back on their IT budgets- this seems like a simple area in which to cut costs- you simply stop all IT development for a while, maybe a budget year and let people get on with their IT as it is without the scope for further development- makes some sense I suppose.

Or is there another reason? Maybe there is still project work going on; however the job function is being carried out by other staff and adding to their workload- another sensible answer perhaps? The bottom line though is that if you are indeed in that sector, what is clear is that your CV needs to be perfect.

Not only are people not using project managers or worse, not developing their IT, there is now a glut of highly talented, skilled people who are all competing in a smaller and smaller job market My advice to anyone in this situation is simply this; when creating your CV, make sure you highlight the tangible benefits that an employer has enjoyed as a result of having you employed.

What benefits did the company enjoy- did they save money?, make processes more effective and therefore save money?, did the process improve sales through getting sales people more pertinent information quicker- did they make more money? Perhaps a picture is starting to form here?

Money is important to an employer- if they are cutting costs, you have to show how much value there is in what you do. If you don’t- maybe you ought to change careers as you will certainly be competing with IT project managers who do show this clearly in their CVs
