What makes a
good CV?
First and foremost, clarity.
Black ink on a plain background (white or beige) works best. Think
of the effect that outrageous paint schemes has on a prospective
house buyer- the same thing goes for your CV
Start with your name and contact
details, namely your full address, telephone number(s) and email
address (private if at all possible)
Continue your CV with your profile. Your profile is a short paragraph of text showing what you do, and where you fit in. The job of the profile is to show the reader quickly that you match what they are looking for- it should invite the reader to continue reading. Your profile should be interesting enough to hold interest and brief enough to make the reader want to read more.
Starting with your most
recent job, list basic details such as dates employed positions,
etc. The important part of this is that you show off your key
achievements- make sure you quantify exactly what benefit you had to
the organisation. For example, don’t just say ‘responsible for a
sales team of 5’. Rather, increased sales by £25,500 (14.6%) a month
over 14 months through 2 telesales and 3 field sales people.
Continue listing employment
experience; however use most space for the most recent employment
achievements. See the example CV section to see exactly what we mean
Finalise the CV with a brief
section covering your interests- make sure that they are factual-
you never know who will be interviewing you! The very last thing you
want is to have a detailed discussion on bee keeping at an interview
if you haven’t the faintest clue about bees!
Career gaps
You must make sure you cover
any gaps in employment with an adequate explanation. Be honest, if
you’ve been unemployed, say so, you were somewhere on the planet, so
tell people what happened. If you have done any voluntary work in
periods of work inactivity, please make sure you show potential
employers what you were doing.
